Our History
The site of the Rocky River garden before it was fenced in in 2010.
The Rocky River Community Garden was founded in 2010. Immediately before that, it was owned by the Brewer family, who sold the land to the city of Rocky River.
It was John Brewer's hope and dream that the land would be turned into a community garden. He had gardened the land for decades as a hobby... planting fruit trees, vegetables and berry bushes.
Our community garden is really a piece of Rocky River history.
At the turn of the 20th century, Rocky River was known for its truck farms and green houses.
According to the 1910 census, the site of the Rocky River Community Garden was originally a truck farm owned by the Sorenson family. Based on county records, the farm ran from Hilliard Avenue north to Detroit.
Our community garden is just north of the Rocky River Senior Center. Just park in the senior center lot and walk toward the lake and you'll find it.
It's one of the few areas left in the city of Rocky River that's still an active garden.
