Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Rocky River Community Garden?
The Rocky River Community Garden is a volunteer-run organization and as such requires all members to assist in the daily, weekly, and seasonal care, upkeep, and support of the garden. The garden experience involves individually maintained garden plots, as well as cooperative efforts in caring for the entire garden site. Because a community garden is a shared space, gardeners need to be considerate of their gardening neighbors. Rules and guidelines have been designed to facilitate community garden safety and a community garden environment gratifying to work in as well as pleasant for gardeners, neighbors, and the public to look upon.
Where is the garden?
The community garden is north of or behind the Rocky River Senior Center on Wagar Road.
Are plots available?
Contact Sharlene Marty to inquire about available space for the 2024 season. A waitlist is maintained throughout the year for the next growing season.
What size are the plots and how much do they cost?
Plots are available in these sizes:
5'x20' ground plot $60
5'x10' ground plot $30
5'x10' raised bed on ground $30
2'x8' raised planter box $25 (Six available, preference is given to individuals with needs or 65+)
4'x8' raised planter box $30 (Nine available, preference is given to individuals with needs or 65+)
Can I plant whatever I want?
No. The Garden allows annual plants that can be removed at the end of the season; garlic and onions are exceptions. Plants on the Ohio Invasive Species list are prohibited. Sunflowers, Morning Glories, and corn are not allowed because they often shade neighboring plots.
Will you phone me if there is a problem with or news about the garden?
No. The main form of communication for RRCG is email. All Gardeners must have a valid email to register.
Do I need to bring my own gardening tools?
Wheelbarrows, hoes, rakes, and shovels are provided. You are welcome to bring your own tools as well.
How do I water my garden?
Waterlines with hoses and watering cans are available for use during garden hours, typically 8 a.m. to sunset. A sink is available to rinse your hands and produce.
Is there parking?
Parking is available in the paved lots adjacent to the RR Senior Center. There is no "parking" at the garden. You may drive back to load or unload what cannot be carried; your vehicle must be moved immediately to the lot prior to beginning your work. Please drive slowly as there may be walkers on the path and children who play in the area.
Are the plants provided?
Tenants are responsible for bringing their own plants and seeds.
May I bring my dog to the garden?
Pets are not allowed inside the garden fence at any time. If you bring your pet to the garden, please follow all city ordinances. Pets should be on a leash and the owner should remove any "gifts" their pet leaves on the ground.
What are my responsibilities as a gardener in a community garden?
A community garden is dependent on all members to care for their garden as well as our common areas. Each plot renter takes a turn opening or closing the garden for one week during the season. In addition, a minimum of five volunteer hours are required throughout the year tending to committee work and projects. Everyone has ample opportunity to get involved.
